History and the myth of the Tarot
Many stories and theories surround the origin of the Tarot. All of them contributed to a mystification of the Tarot and still make up a not inconsiderable charm of the cards today.
Where exactly the cards originated is not entirely clear. Presumably, the first playing cards came from the Middle East or India.
One of the legends assumes the origin of the tarot cards in Egypt. Here, the symbols of the cards are said to be found in Egyptian pyramids. The word Tarot is derived from the god of magic named Thot. The first cards served primarily the purpose of pure card playing. The Tarot only acquired a spiritual significance from the 18th century onwards. The mystical origin of the cards then became the focus of interest again and was the subject of numerous written treatises. Various theories came into circulation.
